Since December 2014, Emfasis is operating a Mobile Support Unit, consisting of a van and a team of volunteer social street workers.
Thanks to our Mobile Support Unit we managed to multiply the geographical coverage of the mapped areas with a big concentration of vulnerable population, whilst we continue the daily supply of all those who need basic survival means, such as clothing, food, sleeping bags, personal hygiene items, first aid) and overall support.
Three times a week, from 10pm to 2am, the unit visits areas where there is abundant homelessness and provides multi faceted support to all of those who feel forgotten and marginalized.
Orestis Makris, Social Street Worker:
“It is late at night… I am going home after one more mobile support unit shift. Every time, the same effort to sleep as fast as I can…every time the same failure. How can you stop thinking of all these people that will spend another night out on the street, exposed to all kinds of hardship and dangers and most important of all are left to endless loneliness? How can you stop thinking the small conversations you have just had, the smiles you gave and received in return, the deeply personal stories a “stranger” shared with you in a dark corner somewhere in the center of Athens? I haven’t yet found the answer…”
